As a fairly new writer, I’ve kinda concentrated on fiction….but, a link on Jenny’s Blog recently, had me dashing over to Midlife Collage for a read.
Being that I am *cough cough* of a certain age, I am allowed to join this site *snigger*
I’ve never really considered the idea of memoir writing. I don’t think my life has been that interesting to warrant it. Who would actually want to read it? I didn’t have an awful childhood (by most standards) and as an adult, there have been major difficult times, but again, I don’t consider that I stand out from the crowd 🙂
Sooooo….a new challenge maybe? Life writing?

Have you ever tried writing memoir or do you tend to stick strictly to fiction?
I spent most of yesterday working on my final OCA assignment. I’ve managed to write a 2500 word romance, which was the story that I wrote for the prompt about being in a garden. I think it will be suitable for one of the women’s magazines, but I’m not quite sure which one yet. Will have to do some research 😉
Yesterday’s prompt was hindered by toothache 😦 but, the woman in the window breathed life into the start of a story about a female delivery driver, trying to deliver a parcel. I’m not too sure where it’s going, I’m thinking ghost story perhaps? 🙂 Tomorrow’s prompt is on the eve of the funeral so that’s conjuring up loads of ideas 🙂

I love that picture! It shows such a great spirit. I’ve never written memoir exactly unless you consider some of the stuff on my blog, but interestingly people have suggested that my 1st novel Searching for My Wand could be considered Memoir.

Ahhhh, that’s interesting. So do you think that there’s a little bit of memoir in everything you write, like you draw on personal experience and fictionalise it?

Not really, but at the same time a friend read my next book On a Hot August Afternoon and said we need to have coffee and talk because obviously I’ve had a whole other life he knows nothing about. I thought that was a great compliment.

Most of my fiction is autobiographical in some way but I wouldn’t like the structure or a need to tell the truth in a memoir.

Your cute photo made me wonder who, just out of frame, is telling you to stick your tongue out. My imagination supplies a mischievous older brother. Oo, Fodder Alert! Like you, I don’t consider my life interesting enough to create a book around. Though bits and pieces of my observations creep in. Good luck shopping your short.

I think I have the vaguest autobiographical thing, e.g. a particular experience may be the basis for an event in a story, but not much more.
I’m not sure a memoir of me sitting round on the sofa, or reading a book of whatever would be that interesting. Well there is some cool stuff in there but I prefer my own privacy!

I think I’m a bit like you hon…..something from my own life might trigger a scene or idea but that’s about it usually.
Lol….ok, yeah, I think readers only want the exciting bits 😉

I like to fuse the two genres. My favorite thing in the world is when someone can’t decide whether it is truth or fiction. This is especially fun when people who know me have read my fiction. The very best stories are those that seem real and I love leaving the reader wondering what is fact and what is illusion.
