A Writers Holiday

I’m off to Wales for a week in July. A Writing Holiday that I’ve heard is great.

The Summer Writers Holiday at Caerleon has had some great reviews from fellow writers, so I thought I’d give it a go 🙂

So this is where you’ll find me come the 22nd of July. Really looking forward to it! 🙂

The courses I’ve decided to do while I’m there are:

A Complete Introduction To Romance Writing with Kate Walker as I’m reading one of Kate’s books at the moment, and I’m also enrolled on the Romance course I started last week. I’d love to be able to write good quality romance 🙂

Stretching Your Writing Muscles with Elizabeth Hawksley which I thought sounded rather interesting. The course is described as:
All writers need to loosen their writing ligaments a little to explore different ways of writing and find new ways of tackling their own writing. This course aims to do just that. we’ll look at what makes for bad writing – with examples! We’ll look at how writers tackle those big emotional moments; at how not to cop out when the going gets tough; at different ways of getting under the skin of a character; what pitch and stress can do for your writing and so on. This is a taught course and as well as discussion and looking at short extracts from published writers, the class will have a go for themselves in various exercises. That sounds right up my street! Lol

There are also guest speakers and other small talks and courses….WOW 🙂

I will no doubt adopt the roving reporter cap while I’m there, boring you all senseless with my daily commentary *snigger*

  1. The stretching your writing muscles sounds interesting. I’ve never done a writing seminar, but I’d like to because I think it would make me a better writer. I always need help on that front.

  2. A week of writing sounds heavenly! Please share so that I can at least live it vicariously. 🙂
    I’ve always felt like a bit of an outsider when it comes to writing retreats, though I can’t really explain why. I love to write, I write a lot, and I want to improve just like everyone else there, so it really doesn’t make sense. Maybe I just need to go to one and work it out. 🙂

    • It can be quite exhausting though Kirsten, in a good way though lol 😉

      Ahhhh, yeah, I can see what you’re saying. I kind of struggle with the social side. I like to be on my own sometimes, sit in a corner and write, people watch. I get up early so by 10pm im shattered. That’s hard because at my first retreat that was when everyone was going to the bar and “mingling” 😦

      People say I come across as confident, but I’m not lol

      Is there a weekend one you could go to?

  5. I did a writing course on Skyros some years ago. Fabulous place for a holiday and a writing course. Very intensive and very hot and I fell in love [a doomed relationship from the start].

  7. Just to chip in on the writing hols – went to Swanwick last year and going again this year. Its great. Its like being in a bubble. Everyone talking about writing. No TV. No papers. The outside world doesn’t exist! Lovely – mind you, you need a holiday to recover! Hope to do Skyros one day. Unfortunately can’t do Caerleon this year:0(

  13. How absolutely delightful! When I lived in New England, I held a ‘writers’ weekend’ and my adult students from the SF bay area came and we wrote in cafes, next to Louisa May Alcott’s house, and at Walden Pond, Henry David Thoreau’s stomping ground. We were inspired and wrote many many pages of creative stories. I hope you have the same success.

  15. Hi Vikki, I’ll definitely be reading your blog!!. I don’t think I would have the confidence to go myself, even if I lived in the UK…I’m too used to my little Mountains nest and the thought of all that minging at the bar alarms me no end.lol. We have a writer’s centre here in the Blue Mts at Katoomba but I’ve only been to day events there, not to stay as many other people do. Have a great time!

      I’m gunna be updating it every day in Caerleon 🙂

      I think it definitely helps that I’m going to know a few people there 🙂 I’m not sure I could go if I didn’t! Like you, I’m not really a mingler 😦

      Ooooo, the place near you do overnight courses? Hmmmm, I wonder if I could get round the hubby….probably not lol

      • The writers’ centre here is called Varuna; used to be the home of one of our well known writers..they have residencies of up to several weeks. You might have to dodge a few funnel web spiders and snakes if you come. Better let you get on with your packing..dont forget that laptop for the blogs!!!
