Boxing Day was traditionally the day that people gave their servants a Christmas Box, a small gift to recognise their loyalty and service.
As a child, I thought it literally meant that they had boxing matches on this day 😉 Most of my childhood was spent knowing that Boxing Day meant a large spread of buffet style food and a visit from family. A chance to all get together for a party!
As an adult, I’ve still kept the tradition of having a spread, but, as we don’t have family to invite round (all say awwwww lol) it’s turned into a relaxing day, almost a pyjama day! Lol.
It made me laugh when I first read Peter Jones book, How To Do Everything and Be Happy (which I HIGHLY recommend by the way) because he has adopted the idea of having a Boxing Day once a month, which I do try to do.
So today I’m going to spend the whole day reading 🙂 I’m not gunna even pick up a pen or go on my iPad…..if you see me online SHOUT AT ME!

Driving. I’m taking my mother back to her house, repacking, driving back the way I came on Thursday and flying to Boston in preparation for New Years on Friday. So traveling. Have fun reading 🙂

Still at my sister’s where we’ll continue to over eat, watch movies and possibly take the girls out to the after Christmas sales so that they can spend the money their aunt and uncle gave them.

Today will be spent with more Skyping across the ocean to UK family, struggling through Boxing Day sales and having friends over for supper. I like to be busy.

In Canada, the boxing matches take place in the stores 8^). The tradition developed some years ago that retail is open but non-retail workers have the day off. This was the day to sell off excess stock at deep discounts. Of course, with modern real-time inventory systems there is no excess stock, so now it’s just an excuse to continue the pre-Christmas sales, especially for those who got gift cards for Christmas. A recent survey said that more than 60% of Canadians planned to go shopping today (that’s 21 million shoppers!).

Glad to hear about origins of boxing day. I’ve never looked it up, but always been curious every time I’ve seen it on the calendar. Just cleaning up today and taking it easy. Nice to have a relaxing day. 🙂
