How Do You Refer To Your Partner?

A recent post by the lovely Bridget Whelan got me thinking….

Bridget’s post, A Twitter Confession referred back to a post she made last year on how she didn’t follow people who referred to their husbands as “The Hubster”. This recent post was a retraction of her original comments, and honestly Bridget, I didn’t take offence πŸ™‚

You see, those of you who have been following this blog for a while will know that I always refer to my husband as The Hubster. The reason being that when I started this blog I needed something to use in place of “The Husband” because that, to me, sounds too formal, and that’s not how I talk. I always say that I am the same on my Blog and Facebook as I am in real life, so why use a reference that I wouldn’t normally use in my real life, unless I was putting on my posh voice πŸ˜‰

So what other words used to describe husbands (and equally wives) have I seen/heard? These are the ones that came to mind:

Hubby
Hubster
Significant Other
Him/Her Indoors (usually pronounced ‘im or ‘er)
Hero
DH (Darling/Dear Husband or Designated Hitler)
LOML (Love Of My Life)
My Man
Other Half
BF or GF (Boyfriend/Girlfriend)
The Moose (yes, seriously!)
Mr/The Mrs

And one of my favourites, used by Mills & Boon author Kate Walker The Babe Magnet *sniggers*

Don’t even get me started on the “pet names” I’ve heard people use in public for each other lol. In our house the closest thing to a pet name is “pickle” & “pumpkin” and both are used exclusively for the cats and dog πŸ˜‰

I guess that I could just use his name, but, I don’t feel too comfortable with that, what with this blog being public. It’s not really my right to do that is it?

So Mr Thompson, if you’re reading this, how would you prefer to be referred to?

And how do you refer to your partner (male or female) online? Any good ones I’m likely to steal to use in my fiction πŸ˜‰

  1. On FB and Twitter, I refer to my husband as Gajitman, but at home, I’ll introduce him as Garry, my husband πŸ™‚ I’m not keen on ‘the’ husband or ‘the’ wife – it’s too much like saying ‘the’ cat or ‘the’ gerbil. Which of course is fine, if that’s their pet name πŸ™‚

    • Spouse….ahhhh, yeah, I can see that working Sue, and of course, it doesn’t indicate sex either.

Oh, I use his name when I’m talking about him, but, the last 2 days when I’ve met up with friends for coffee I have noticed myself saying “husband” lol

  2. I’m not married, but when I first started going out with my partner I called him ‘The Boy’ as he was younger than me (only a year but I liked the idea of having a toy boy. Now I just call him by his name though (at least when talking about him to others) – which is really dull and functional, but it does the job.
I love that you use teh pet names for teh pets though. Ha!

  3. Being a gentleman ( rumour has it) when Ju was alive I’d know better than to swear in public so Ju, Julia or Her Ladyship was about it. Just recently I’ve had so many toe stubbings, unexplained sounds in the house and electrical malfunctions I’m tempted to refer to her as the Ghost.
It must be her payback time.

  4. I call mine ‘my other half’ and I’ve heard him refer to me as ‘my partner’. We’re not married. Online I like to keep his identity secret – long story there. So I refer to him by his work name: Chief. People in his job/rank are generically called Chief.

  5. I don’t know why but it sounds more like referring to sports car, which I suppose is ok :o) but in real life… Perhaps that’s not too accurate.
Maybe I’m just plain old fashioned but Hubbie is about right.
Darling, carry on with Hubster and I’ll keep the engine revving for you :o) xx

  6. What a great question! I pondered this before I started my blog a couple of years ago. I want to give those in my family privacy, but my blog is on ‘flashes of life,’ so of course, they’re in there. So I never named my husband except as ‘my man’ (my friends just LOVE this, and have begun calling him that when we go out to the movies or dinner – tee hee). My adult children – just daughter, or her initial, and same with son. Still not sure how to handle that one.

Ha ha ha, yeah, some if my friends now refer to him as The Hubster when they ask how he is lol

I don’t tend to mention my kids on here, but I think, like you, when I have I just say son or daughter.

      Hard isn’t it 😦

  7. Online, I call him the hub, which has a suggestion of him being the centre of everything as well as short for husband, LOL. I mean, I can’t actually put ‘miserable old git’, can I? πŸ˜‰ I’ve seen a lot of others use OH (other half). I like your use of ‘hubster’!

  8. So glad you didn’t take offence Vikki!! But of course I was thinking of you when I made my confession because I’ve seen the error of my ways…If I had kept to my original self-imposed rules – born out of prejudice – about who I wouldn’t follow on twitter I’d have missed out big time. The subject’s caused a lot of debate on my blog as well – I think OH is really very touching. We’re so used to hearing it that it just slips by, but the words are a powerful way of describing the way two people relate to one another.

It’s a diverse world, and how boring it would be if it wasn’t!

Oh, I agree, OH is VERY sweet. But, I think I’m going to stick with The Hubster *sniggers*

  9. I tend to talk about ‘my husband’ rather than mentioning him by name. People who know us will recognise who I’m talking about and for the rest, it protects his privacy. Nicknames in private only πŸ™‚

  10. I love the wordplay of OH–very cute. I call my husband The DH. Though I did write a post that ended “Sometimes the D in DH does NOT stand for dear.” πŸ˜‰ The few times I refer to my son, I call him just that–my son. Interesting post, Vikki.

  11. I rarely mention my husband in my public writing as he is so private, so I try to respect that. The times I do include him in a piece, I usually refer to him as Hubz. πŸ™‚

  12. I’ve been married just over a year and I’m still getting used to saying ‘my husband’. I feel I’m too young to have a husband, *snigger*, and I love that you refer to yours as the Hubster.
I have a bit of northern British accent so like to say ‘me ‘usband’, when I’m talking about him. I have to laugh though, he always calls me ‘Boss’.
