One of the exercises on the Future Learn course this week is to make a list of our “concerns” as this will help us build up a self-portrait of who we are as writers. It will also help us to become clearer about what matters to us, as these subjects are bound to crop up in our writing.
Ok, well you know me, I’m game…heres my list…
- The safety of my family
- Sleep problems
- Fear of death
- Love and protection of animals
- Hatred of infidelity
- An interest in the supernatural
- What makes people tick
- Cooking/Baking
- The Victorian Period
- Memories
- Art
- Love
- Good over riding Evil
Wow, thats a big old list lol…but im sure i can just keep adding to it. So what does that list indicate about me as a writer do you think?
What would be on your list?
One of mine would be whether I was ever good enough or whatever I was doing would be good enough

My list is similar to yours, especially fear of death. Wasn’t like that before, it recently changed in the past year. This is a good exercise/idea, think I might write some of mine down.

Thanks Amber 🙂
Thats interesting, why do you think its changed recently?

My best friend and I were talking about it & she thinks it’s because we’re getting older 🙂 The other- just too many losses recently. Though I fear it & don’t think I will get all I want done, I try not to focus on it and do what I can. Guess that’s all we can do, right? 🙂

Your list reveals you as Passionate, curious, sentimental, moral, sociable, human and very interesting. All good traits for a writer.

That’s an interesting list Vikki. You share a lot of my interests! I would add mother/daughter relationships to this. I’m just about to pop over to the OU course and start reading and writing. It’s an excellent resource isn’t it? Makes me wish I could do their MA…some day…. 🙂

Thats a good one to add, but mine would probably be “Parent Child Relationships” i’ll have to add that 😉

My list involves zombies and small children. I’m thinking these lists say a lot about what we write.

Now that sounds scary Lyle 😉
I think sometimes i avoid writing about these subjects, because its too intense, too emotional….perhaps i should 🙂

My list changes all the time. What I can say is writing helped me deal with painful circumstances and emotional turmoil. Without the pain I would not be writing and without the writing I’d be a mess. 🙂

Ive found journal writing invaluable when I’ve been going through an emotionally hard time, so I’m a big believer in writing as therapy 🙂

I think it was Bradbury who said take the thing you fear the most and write about it. That list would be a great starting point for a story as anything you write about that will be quite raw and visceral.
I should make a similar list, what a great idea!

Thanks Celine, yes, i remember hearing a quote along those lines 🙂

Love the quote…have written it down for future reference. Right now I have big concerns about grief, death, living alone, soul searching, love…real true love, abuse, and living…truly living.

My list would contain losing my boyfriend who has to go back home to Germany in a few weeks, me going insane because of this loss, starvation of people around the world, violence and torture, and safety of my family and friends. Interesting and thought-provoking post, Vikki!
