Musing About The Muse

I’ve been thinking a lot lately about my “muse” 🙂

I even looked the word up in the Oxford English Dictionary lol

noun
1 MUSE (in Greek and Roman mythology) each of nine goddesses, the daughters of Zeus and Mnemosyne, who preside over the arts and sciences.

2a woman, or a force personified as a woman, who is the source of inspiration for a creative artist:
Yeats’ muse, Maud Gonne

Ok, so she’s female is she? Lol….nope, sorry, I’m not buying that.

I was under the impression (don’t ask me why) that my muse was suppose to be a real person, but I’ve seen so many writers refer to their muse as part of themselves. Ok, interesting idea. So if my muse can be almost like an imaginary person, a part of me, that means I can have a male muse doesn’t it?

You can probably tell from my writing that I have a dark side. You might also have been able to tell that one of my favourite books is Wuthering Heights, and that I’ve got a bit of a thing for Heathcliff *sniggers*

Sooooo, I’m hoping that my muse kind of looks like this lol

Could my muse be the “male” dark and broody part of my character?

Ok, probably not, so I’m still confused lol

Tell me about your muse……

I’m still struggling about the idea that it’s not a real person lol 😉

A Little Birdhouse In Your Soul

Isn’t that the line from a song? I don’t know why I’ve got it stuck in my head lol.

Anyway, this is this weeks picture prompt…..

Taken in Jersey, in the courtyard of The Jersey Museum. Cute. I’m trying to go happier, can you tell? Lol 😉

I’ll post what it inspired me to write on Tuesday 🙂

20 Things I Learnt From An Agent

I don’t know about you, but to me, agents are scary lol.

So i was thrilled when i learnt that our June speaker for the writing class (The Write Place) was Agent Jacqueline Burns who looked nothing like Medusa lol. I was relieved to find she was lovely lol. I know I know, they’re normal people too 😉

Soooo, it’ll be no surprise to you that I ended up with 8 pages of notes!!!! 8 pages! I’ve spent the week, going through them, trying to assemble them into something that makes sense, and here’s the result….20 things I learnt from listening to Jacqueline.

1. Get someone to interview you about your book. If they’re asking too many questions, could it be that actually, it’s not working in places? Ask them if there’s anything they want to know more about.

2. Give your book to friends (preferably NON writers) for feedback. Rather than just asking friends and family to read your book, give them each a specific job. Ask 1 to look at the dialogue, another to look at description, 1 to check that your characters are coming across a certain way etc etc.

3. Concept is EVERYTHING! Ok, Romeo & Juliet is a great concept, it’s a love story, but, it’s dramatic. Setting can be your concept, think Hogwarts or The Pyramids. From what I could gather, concept is like your unique selling point. Think Alice Sebolds The Lovely Bones, the whole story told by a dead girl. Experiment, develop a selling point, something that makes your novel stand out from the rest. Concept is the core meaning of your book.

4. Write with an outline. If you don’t, the first draft will be written with your heart, the 2nd with your head. You’ll quite possibly struggle later when it comes to editing.

5. Think about what the strength of your novel is. Is it dialogue? Description? Your characters? If you don’t have a strength, develop one.

6. Reduce your synopsis down to one sentence. Agents sell to publishers. They need your book to have a snappy punch line. Something that will grab them, and the publishers.

7. Question yourself, re-examine everything. Redraft, redraft, redraft and don’t send your MS out to a publisher until, in your mind, it’s as best as it can be. Agents can tell if they receive a first draft and first drafts go immediately to the slush pile.

8. Most first novels have at least 1 extract in them that shouldn’t be there. Most first time novelist’s just throw everything they want to include in their book down on the page. Often there are parts that really, bear no relevance, and are usually based on the writers personal experience. Most agents would rather receive something that is only 70,000 words than 100,000 that includes lots of scenes that don’t belong there.

9. READ! It’s surprising how many writers don’t actually read. Agents can tell.

10. Record yourself talking about your book. Most writers struggle doing a synopsis, and the novel comes across better when they talk about it. Transcribe your recording and use that as your synopsis. The concept should come across in that.

11. Make the agent care. What’s the character going through? What does he/she want? What happens to them along the way? Make sure it stands out who the reader is rooting for. Readers are selfish, they want the nitty gritty.

12. Carry copies of your synopsis to any literary events. Have copies on you at all times when you attend talks and workshops. You never know when an opportunity could arise.

13. Don’t make recommended changes just because blah blah said so. If an agent tells you to change something then resubmit, only do it if you agree. You could end up changing it, resubbing and the agent still doesn’t like it. Remember agents are fickle, with short memories. They’ll forget you and your novel within a week.

14. Take out meaningless drivel. If someone coughs at the beginning of your novel, you better make sure they’re gunna die by the end. Everything has to have a meaning, a reason to be there.

15. Agents are looking to say no. As harsh as it seems, an agent knows on the first page whether they’re interested in your book. Don’t give them reasons to say no.

16. Make sure your start is great! You need to grab them on the first page, if you don’t, your manuscript is doomed. Don’t forget, Agents receive hundreds of manuscripts per week.

17. Embrace social media. All writers should be building up their online presence before publishing a book, plus, it’s good practice to write Blogs.

18. There’s no minimum word count. But, if your MS is finished at 70,000 words ask yourself why? If its because your writing is tight then great. There is a definite move in publishing towards smaller books. People are busy and don’t want huge tomes.

19. Network! Get in front if agents and publishers as much as you can. Build online relationships by following agents blogs.

20. Ok manuscripts are worse than bad ones. Because at least bad ones stand out lol 😉

Well, I found a lot of that very useful. It gave me a lot to think about that’s for sure lol. I know not all of us want to go down the Agent first route, but it seems logical to me. Jacqueline said that if she really likes someone’s novel, their voice, the story, the concept, she is happy to work with them for up to 2 years to get the novel polished and to the point where she is confident she’ll be able to sell it to a publisher.

Personally, I like the idea of having an agent, what do you think?

Insecure Writers Day – July

Today is Insecure Writers Support Day 🙂

20120629-052447.jpg

…..and yes, that was a smile. I’m not smiling because I have no insecurities, I’m smiling because I’ve finally made a decision about my WIP…. *drum roll please*

I’m going to STOP

Yep, that’s right, you heard me lol….there are a couple of reasons:

1. I keep hearing from so many people that you should never edit before you’ve finished, purely because if you do, you’ll NEVER actually finish it. I’m beginning to believe it, as it’s still not finished, so I made a big mistake there 😦

And

2. I attended a talk by an agent last week, which has made me decide it’s not strong enough. You wait till you see my post, 20 Things I Learnt From An Agent (which I’ll be posting on Friday). Seriously, I’m being realistic. What’s that old expression about flogging a dead horse? Lol

The 65,000 words that currently make up But Not Forgotten were written in 2010. I’ve changed so much as a writer since then, I’ve learnt so much. My main problem is getting back into that mindset. Getting back the feelings I had in 2010 when I wrote it. I’m being logical (which is soooo unlike me, I’m usually a heart person, not a head person lol) and logic tells me it’s still a good story, but, it’s just not good enough.

I want to be published. There, I said it, out loud. Is But Not Forgotten a strong enough debut novel for the cut throat publishing industry where your manuscript has to stand out amongst thousands? No, I don’t believe it is, and that’s not just me having confidence issues. I’m being cruel to myself to be kind. I don’t want to still be banging on about this bloody MS in 2 years time. I need to gather my thoughts, decide what I’m going to do next, and move on 🙂

So although I’m feeling delicate, almost a bit bereft, I’m glad I’ve finally accepted where I’m going with this. I need to put the whole lot to bed, move on 🙂

Wow, I feel like someone I hate has just died lol. So onwards and upwards 🙂 I have a few decisions to make over the coming week, something which is quite exciting if I decide to go for it….I’ll tell you more, as and when 🙂

So how are my fellow IWSG members doing? Don’t worry if you’re not a member, if there’s something you want to get off your chest I’m all ears, and available for virtual hugs, chocolate, lattes, wine, that kind of thing 🙂

To Do List – 2nd to 8th July

Well, I’m liking this whole “to do list” thing I’ve got going on, much better than “goals” lol.

I did ok this week, well, kinda lol

Do my homework (a character sketch of a Hero) for Sally Quilford’s Pocket Novel Course. Yep, did that 🙂

Tidy my work space. I now have 5 piles Ummm, sort of, I’ve got it back to 3 piles, but it still needs going through lol

Sort out the blog awards & memes I received and was tagged with over the last 2 weeks. Done that, although the Meme posts have been done and in my draft folder. I’ve just got to find a free day to post them, I have so much to say about other stuff lol

Upload all my photos to Flickr Ah, now, this didn’t get done 😦 But only coz I was out all day Saturday at a workshop (will tell you all when I get a chance lol).

Decide what to do with the WIP (But Not Forgotten). Hmmmm, yeah, I have made a decision, but you’ll have to wait til Wednesday to find out what 🙂

I’ve got a fairly free week coming up…. Tomorrow I’m having a skin tag removed (yuk yuk yuk), then Wednesday is Insecure Writers Support Group Day (where I will definitely be talking about the WIP) and that’s really all I have in my diary, apart from writing class 🙂

Soooooo, my “to do” list for this coming week is……

Read through my WIP with the idea of making notes on the ending lol

Tidy my workspace, I mean really tidy it lol

Do my home work for the Pocket Novel course

Upload all my pics to Flickr

Read at least 1 book this week I’m fed up not reading. It’s ridiculous!

20120628-152130.jpg

There, that’s not too bad is it? 😉

I’ve also decided to start taking part in Six Sentence Sundays so my picture prompt will move to Saturdays from now on 🙂

What are your plans for the week?

Inspiration In Jersey

I think I’ve finally come down to earth, and gathered my thoughts about the trip to Jersey. I learnt so much about WWII and the German occupation of the island. It was all very sad at times, but also, quite inspirational 🙂

So, here are some brief notes, observations and things that I found inspiring.

The woman on the flight out who clutched a bunch of drooping hand picked wild flowers all the way to Jersey.
Dog walkers on the beach at 6am every morning.
The 3 crow bullies who attacked the wood pigeon.
The husband, who was totally disinterested in his wife’s awe at the historical site.
All the notes left on the alter at the Chapel of Notre Dame de la Clarte.
The coldness and atmosphere of The War Tunnels.
The art by Ronnie Heeps at Mont Orgueil Castle.
The quietness inside The Glass Church.
The smell of the fire in 16 New Street.
The textile art by Karen Le Roy Harris and writing by Vicky Hinault at The Jersey Museum.
The sad look on Freddie Jones face as he sat at the bar on his own.
The scariness of the Devils Hole.
The woman taking a photo of her 2 teenage daughters while a seagull tried to make off with her handbag (that was hilarious!).
The romance of The Princes Tower and the disappointment I felt when I discovered it had been demolished 😦

I took lots of photos, many of which I’ll be able to use as prompts 🙂 So you’ll be seeing a few of those over the coming weeks lol. And of course, my ideas about Louisa May Gould which I’ll tell you all about next week 😉

But above all, the most inspiring thing about the holiday was the view from my balcony. Waking up to the sound of the waves crashing against the sand and being able to sit and write, at 6am every morning staring out over the bay. That is something I will never forget 🙂

Have you ever found that perfect spot? The place where inspiration seems to come so easily?

Is My Writing Improving? Part 2

to follow on from the previous post…..

Since the first of January I have been using The Writers Book Of Days by Judy Reeves to encourage me to write every day. It’s been hard at times, to the point where I’ve wanted to give up, but I haven’t, and I’m determined to see it through until the 31st of December.

As I’m kind of half way in the book (and because Judy provides a checklist), I thought I’d do the exercise How Can I Tell If My Writing Is Improving here on my blog

Soooo, after 6 months of daily prompts, let’s see shall we….. PART 2

You can find Part 1 HERE

11. Do I layer my writing with sensory images, including smells, sounds and textures. Crafting tasted emotions, heard colours and hence, creating mood?
Oh definitely, but I’m not a huge fan of synesthesia. I’d love to fill my work with it, but, I dunno, that just wouldn’t be me lol

12. Have I learnt not to overwrite, or be stingy with words?
Ha ha ha, I don’t think I could ever be accused of overwriting lol

13. Have I expanded my language, learned new words?
Hmmmm, not really. I write as I talk. So, usually, if it’s a word I wouldn’t use in real life, you wouldn’t find it in my writing, unless it’s in dialogue and the character speaks using long words that no one understands 😉

14. Have I found my voice?
Oh, a resounding YES but I’m not sure whether that’s been totally down to the daily prompts. I think it’s helped, but also blogging daily has helped too.

15. Do I save the strongest word for the last sentence without the sentence sounding false?
I’m aware of this tip, but I often forgot it *hits fore head with palm* so I must make more of an effort.

16. Have I stopped rushing through to get to the end and now take my time, lingering and savouring, letting the tension build?
Sometimes, I think, no, oh I dunno, sometimes I have to rush if I haven’t got much time. It really depends on how inspiring I find the prompt lol

17. Do I take more risks?
Ha ha ha, well, I have been writing more 1st person pieces. I was so scared of it a few months ago. I thought that surely, each time I wrote in 1st person it would sound the same. But hubby has said he can tell a difference now….go me! Lol

18. Have I stopped pulling punches?
Not really sure I understand this question lol. If it means what I think it means, I still avoid certain subjects in depth because I find them too emotional to write about.

19. Have I eliminated generalities, write in specifics?
I think so lol

20. Am I willing to experiment, to try out, go to unknown places in my writing?
No, not exactly, but I would like to. I would lie to experiment with other genres but I’m not too sure where to start 😦

Sooooo, the second lot of questions didn’t have as many positive answers as the first lot, but I’m pleased over all 🙂

A HUGE thank you to Judy Reeves for certainly enriching my writing life. The book has been an incredible help, it really has. I can’t wait to start work on her other stuff 🙂

Exciting!!!!! 🙂

20120625-134923.jpg

Here’s a difficult question for you….. what’s been the most valuable thing you’ve learnt that has improved your writing? For me it has to be the use of all your senses. When I first started writing I didn’t even think about smell or sound *blushes* 😉

A Return To Journalling

I stumbled across a great web site a couple of days ago. Create Write Now which has a free e book download and loads of info on the joy of journal writing.

And then, I came across a post, Keeping A Journal over on The Change Blog, and then another at Writability and at this stage I’m thinking, is somebody trying to tell me something? Lol

So BAM I’m back journalling lol, and I lay the blame right at the feet of Diana M. Raab 🙂 For my birthday treat, hubby took me to Foyles in London on a book buying spree, where I picked up this…..(I won’t tell you how many times I have attempted to pick up that pen on the front cover LMAO!)

20120625-132839.jpg
What can I say? Loved it loved it loved it! Read the back and tell me you’re not interested lol

20120625-133246.jpg

Ok, so it says “Notebook” but, the chapters inside refer to “Journal” and include sections like The Journal as Tool & The Journal as Muse so the writers who have contributed don’t seem to place a distinction between a “writers note book” and a “writers journal”.

For me, the difference is that my notebook, I would be fairly happy for anyone to read (so long as they don’t pinch my ideas lol), but my journal? *sharp intake of breath* I’ll cut your hands off if you read all that personal stuff without my permission 😉

Anyway, so I’ve started journalling again, and it’s been good, yeah, really good, I’m trying not to whine see 😉 Trying to be a bit more constructive lol.

So, dear reader, do you journal? Do you think there’s a difference between a writers notebook and a writers journal?

This Weeks To Do List 25th to 1st

Notice the small change in wording above? Lol

Ok, so this week will mainly involve laundry *snigger* Actually, it wasn’t bad when I got home, my daughter had done a few batches, although, I haven’t seen anything belonging to the 2 boys, so no doubt, theirs will arrive today *slump*

Is it just me or are there a couple of days when you return from holiday when you struggle to get back into the swing?

So, back to business 🙂

The Things I Want To Achieve This Week

Do my homework (a character sketch of a Hero) for Sally Quilford’s Pocket Novel Course.

Tidy my work space. I now have 5 piles 😦 (I bought some books on holiday, and brought home lots of leaflets, maps, receipts etc, so they all need sorting).

Sort out the blog awards & memes I received and was tagged with over the last 2 weeks.

Upload all my photos to Flickr (I did manage to transfer them all to the Netbook yesterday).

Decide what to do with the WIP (But Not Forgotten).

The WIP was discussed with hubby during the holiday, even to the point where I was considering just throwing it away and starting again (something hubby disagreed with). It’s driving me potty!!!! Ooooo, I tell you, have I learnt a valuable lesson or what! Lol…. NEVER EVER again, will I NOT finish a manuscript lol. So I really need some motivation to sit down and work on that bloody ending….the problem is, I’ve been captivated……

One of the places we visited in Jersey was The War Tunnels (I’ll do a more in depth post later this week). As you enter, they give you an ID card and as you leave, you find out what happened to that person. I was given the card of Louisa May Gould.

20120624-080137.jpg

At the end of our visit I discovered that Louisa was arrested and sent to a concentration camp for hiding a Russian slave worker and having a radio. The first coincidence was the year she was born. My house was built in 1891 (those who know me in real life know i have a fascination with the Victorian period) and the second was that the concentration camp she was sent to was opened on my Birthday, May 15th. Only tiny coincidences I know, but, it kind of made me feel some kind of connection with her. I bought a couple of books which have chapters that tell her story more in depth, and now I’m fascinated. No, fascinated is probably the wrong word, I dunno, it’s like it’s grabbed me and it’s going round and round in my head. It’s all I’ve thought about all week. I even ended up turning a couple of my daily prompts into stories that were connected to the German Occupation of Jersey.

Sooooo, is this my opportunity to write the historical novel I keep saying I’d like to try? Is this why I’m now hating on my WIP? I know if I wrote her story (or my own take on it) there would need to be a hell of a lot of research *gulp*

But why can’t I get this woman and her story out of my head? 😦

Feet!

Wellll…. I’M BACK 🙂 At home that is. I had a lovely week away, and my sincere apologies for not keeping on top of all your posts, I tried my best, but did a lot of “liking” and not much commenting lol

Normal service will now be resumed….So here’s a strange prompt for you……

20120612-141026.jpg

Hmmmmm, I’m finding this one hard because I know exactly who’s feet they are and it’s clouding my brain lol.

Look forward to hearing your ideas 🙂 I’ll post mine on Tuesday 🙂
